So why am I writing about this game? Well, it’s great, but that’s hardly all. You’ll get to feel like a stone cold badass when you succeed, and should you fail, just jump back in. You’re flying from truck to truck at super-human speeds. There are powerups which make things easier or more awesome, at your preference. The short iteration time and the relatively short levels do a lot to keep frustration to a minimum, as you find new and exciting ways to overshoot targets and fly into walls, trees, lasers, and the floor. But like all of the best games in this current generation of tough-but-fair platformers, you’re never more than a second or two removed from getting back into the action.
You hold the right trigger down to sprint, and as far as I’m concerned, if you stop sprinting, you’re doing it wrong. It’s focused on the purity of its experience: tight controls, reckless forward momentum and frenetic platforming action. If you’re asking what these trucks are doing here, or why you’re trying to race along them, you’re playing the wrong game. However, it quickly ramps up in difficulty, adding a variety of obstacles in each environment (desert world, forest world, ice world, you know the drill) and concocting ever more ludicrous ways for trucks to drive very badly. The game starts off fairly easily, with tons of trucks, in rows of three, convoying through the desert, and bumping into each other with reckless disregard for the rules of the road. Trucks careen wildly in all directions, flying through the air, ramming into each other, driving off of cliffs, and bursting into flames. Despite the simple aesthetic, this game lives up to its name.
You race towards a finish line, jumping from truck to truck, and the floor is lava (always figuratively, sometimes literally). ClusterTruck is a reminder that a simple core experience, when well-executed, can make for a great game.
